Help & FAQs
TaB Welcome to the "World of TaB Soda".

Everyone remember this "Warning", well it's gone finally!

Saccharin Warning

"Use of this product may be hazardous to your health.  This product contains saccharin which has been determined to cause cancer in laboratory animals."

Contrary to scientists (who put the "Fear of God" into everyone for almost 30 years) Saccharin doesn't appear to kill humans... just rats!

So TaB drinkers, drink away!

The following is some background on the History of Saccharin and The 30 Year Debate.

History of Saccharin & the Debate

From the beginning... TaB has been synonymous with Saccharin and Saccharin with TaB.

TaB Can Saccharin Warning
"Use of this product may be hazardous to your health.  This product contains saccharin which has been determined to cause cancer in laboratory animals."

Beware, the following contains many facts blended with editorial comments!

TaB drinkers had to endure the now famous "Warning" for almost 30 years!

Of course Coca-Cola experimented with other sweeteners over the years (in response to public out-cry over this "Fear of God" warning), but fans like myself have always stayed loyal and Coca-Cola finally returned to Saccharin once again vs NutruaSweet and other combos like Saccharin/Aspartame.

Here's a little history...
1857
Saccharin was discovered by researchers at Johns Hopkins University. Here is some more background on Calorie Control Council Web Site (The World's Oldest Low Calorie Sweetener).

1963
Coca-Cola starts using Saccharin in TaB.

1977
The FDA proposes to ban the use of Saccharin.

1970's-1980's
Saccharin becomes one of the most studied food ingredients and the controversy over its safety continues through-out the 70's & 80's.  The basis for the controversy rests primarily on findings of bladder tumors in some male rats fed high doses of sodium saccharin (equal to several gallons a day in humans).  Once again here is some more background from the CCC Web Site, check out the Controversial Rat Experiments section.

1991
The FDA formally withdrew its 1977 proposal to ban the use of Saccharin

May 15, 2000
The Calorie Control Council issued the following statement:
"We welcome the news that the National Toxicology Program (NTP) is removing Saccharin from its report of cancer-causing substances. This decision is based on a careful review of the extensive scientific evidence documenting saccharin's safety for humans, and is consistent with the recommendations of three NTP committees, including the Executive Committee.

December 21, 2000
President Clinton signed a bill (at least he did something right) that removed the warning label that had been required on Saccharin-sweetened products.

CONGRESS GIVES SACCHARIN A CLEAN "BILL" OF HEALTH

Government, scientists and industry are now all in agreement on saccharin's safety.

So TaB drinkers, drink away!

P.S. To my immediate family, who claimed TaB was "Toxic Waste", I'll accept you apologizes.
