TaB's History

TaB was Coca-Cola
Company's first sugar-free drink, introduced in 1963. Its name was a
play on the notion of people keeping "tabs" on their weight.
Although sales of TaB were surpassed
by the introduction of diet Coke®,
the brand still has fiercely loyal fans (I'm One!) who have been known to
travel hundreds of miles to find their favorite drink.
Beware, the following contains
many facts blended with editorial comments!
Coca-Cola has experimented with the formula over the years, but fans like
myself have always stayed loyal and Coca-Cola finally returned to the
original recipe, which uses Saccharin vs NutruaSweet as the sweetener,
they also tested other combo blends like saccharin/sugar and
saccharin/aspartame, fortunately they all failed. Check out my
Saccharin page for more details on the
saccharin debate.

Coca-Cola, didn't just experiment with sweeteners, they made their loyal
fans suffer through various favor options like
Root Beer TaB, Orange TaB, Black Cherry TaB and various other bad
ideas like TaB w/Calcium. All
these experiments almost drove even the most loyal fan away.

Here is a
Commercial from the 1980's.
Realtime Player Required
In the mid 80's and early 90's they once again used TaB drinkers as
guinea pigs and tried TaB Clear and Caffeine Free TaB, thank god
the testing failed and they finally returned to the original recipe. Here is a few samples
of the packaging over the years.
| Of course, TaB originally was
distributed in bottles and it was
offered in all packaging types until recently when most local bottlers
limited production to only 12 oz. Cans.
TJ Wagner's
TaB website has many other examples of the bottles and cans used
over the years. |
